History

Goals and content of History and Political studies

History at our school is not about a past that we feel has nothing to do with us, or no longer affects us.  Indeed, as it is only possible to fully understand the present by studying the past, our lessons focus far more on how the modern world has been shaped by events that took place in the past and on the relevance of these events to the world in which we now live.

In the lower grades, students are given a chronological overview of the different epochs. Special emphasis is put on acquiring a basic knowledge of Austrian and European history. We focus on connections between the past and the present, with the aim to develop the students‘ political awareness. Lessons in the upper grades build upon the basic knowledge acquired in the lower grades with specialization and detailed examination of selected themes. Emphasis is placed upon the sensible and meaningful use of the media and the acquisition of modern presentation skills with the state-of-the-art media facilities available at the school.

Activities:

Excursions to Mauthausen, museums, exhibitions in Klagenfurt, Leoben, Vienna… Visits to archaeological sites in Carinthia such as Magdalensberg or Teurnia… Guest visits with presentations and discussions in school by external professionals such as Dr. Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle. Participation in EU projects such as ESCO (cross-regional projects involving Italy, Slovenia and Austria)
