Italian

In the regular secondary school program (Gymnasium), Italian is taught as an alternative second living language to French or Latin starting in grade 3. In the technical secondary school program (Realgymnasium) it is offered as an alternative to French or Latin starting in grade 5.

Interest in the Italian language, arising from holidays and day excursions to our neighbouring country, serves as a good basis for learning Italian in a structured and lasting manner. In accordance with the school curriculum and the new standardized examinations, students develop language skills and a level of competence, specified as being important by the European community (listening, reading, writing and speaking). These competencies enable students to communicate successfully in the Italian language.

The dedicated staff conveys an up to date and diversified image of Italian culture. The range of topics and themes cover Italian art, film, contemporary culture, cuisine and music, as well as social issues and everyday life in today’s Italy. Another important goal of our program is to deal with intercultural themes, in order to develop an overall tolerance and understanding for foreign cultures and lifestyles.

New teaching aids (computer, film) and methods ( team work, internet research, student presentations) are used to encourage independent and responsible learning styles, as well as to develop and support individual talents and interests. Creative activities such as theatre, games and role play are also integrated into classroom work.

Whether within the framework of the Alpe Adria project, during extended language trips or through day excursions to Udine and Cividale, students have ample opportunity to test and consolidate their language skills and to experience the Italian „dolce vita“.

The high quality of our program is reflected in our many past achievements in language competitions and in our excellent results in the PLIDA certificate.
