Mathematics

Math in the lower grades (1st – 4th)

The aim of math lessons in the lower grades is not only the expansion of basic arithmetic skills and proficiency in basic terms and definitions of algebra and geometry, but most importantly, the teaching of logical reasoning and the independent solving of mathematical problems. In the technical secondary school program (Realgymnasium) further emphasis is placed on the concept and understanding of spatial visualization ability.

Math in the upper grades (5th – 8th)

The main priority is, of course, to give the students a solid, well-founded basis for their further education. Math is important in many aspects of everyday life and is also an integral part of many branches of study. Apart from basic competence in math, other concepts such as constructive creativity, linguistic skills or aspects of theoretical awareness are taught in the upper grades. Modern technologies such as computer-algebra systems, dynamic geometry software or chart and spread-sheet programs are used as support.

Compulsory elective subject Math (Wahlpflichtfach)

This course deals with a multitude of themes chosen by the students themselves which are not addressed in regular lessons. A prerequisite for participation in the group is a clear logical mind, intellectual agility, with a flair for math and a penchant for experimentation in mathematical theories. Examples demonstrating the diversity of themes addressed are: mathematical proof, mathematical economics, differential equations, matrix, the creative-statistical analysis of questionnaires, the mathematical pros and cons of buying a moped, four color theorem, math and music, dynamic systems, lineal optimization, finance math and so on…

Competitions •Kangaroo competition (Känguru – Wettbewerb) •Alpe – Adria – Competition: this competition takes place alternatively in Udine, Bassano del Grappa, Nova Gorica, Opatija, Timisoara and at our school. The best students in the upper grades take part in this competition in math, sport, natural sciences, music, art and photography.
