New Latin – modern teaching methods

Our program takes students through the multifaceted aspects of ancient European civilization. With the help of integrative and competence-building methods, emphasis is put on the social and political issues of the following module themes:

  • individuals in their everyday life
  • politics and rhetoric
  • love, desire and passion
  • philosophical aspects of human existence
  • the jovial and the profound
  • Latin and Europe
  • scientific language and texts
  • myths and their perception

Students are guided through the above modules to establish the skills needed to successfully pass the standardized final exams:

  • use of various text comprehension and translation methods
  • exercises in text interpretation and updating of texts
  • preparation for future scientific work (vorwissenschaftliche Arbeit)

In the regular secondary school program (Gymnasium), in which either French or Italian is taught starting in Grade 3, Latin is a compulsory subject starting in Grade 5. In the technical secondary school program (Realgymnasium), students can select Latin instead of a second foreign language from Grade 5 through to Grade 8. This meets the entrance qualifications for post-secondary education in Medicine, Law and Language studies. We offer regular excursions to Roman excavation sites in Carinthia, where students get an intimate taste of ancient culture. Another highlight in our Latin program is a visit to the eternal city of Rome. Our success in diverse province and state-wide student competitions reflects the enthusiasm of our students and the excellence of our Latin program.
